Amazon Web Services to cool data centres using recycled water at scale

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced plans to extend its use of recycled water for cooling to more than 120 U.S. data-centre locations by 2030. The initiative is expected to save over 530 million gallons of drinking water annually—a significant stride towards its goal of becoming water positive.
AWS has already reached 53 per cent of that target by 2024, up from 41 per cent the year before. Previously, recycled water was used at 20 locations—16 in Virginia and four in California. The expansion will now include additional sites in Virginia, as well as new locations in Georgia and AWS employs direct evaporative cooling systems using treated wastewater and has become the first data-centre operator in Virginia approved to do so. This method uses up to 85 per cent less water compared to traditional cooling systems
