Enhancing Water Resilience: Key Insights from the ULTIMATE Project

The EU project ULTIMATE is coming to an end and has released on the 17th of October its latest Policy Brief outlining key strategies for incorporating water reuse and resource recovery into broader water resilience strategies.
The brief emphasises the need for circular water management practices, which aligns perfectly with the European Commission’s goal of fostering a sustainable and inclusive economy. By prioritising innovative technologies and best practices in water reuse, the brief indicates that both water scarcity and ecosystem health can be addressed. This approach reinforces the vision of a green transition, focusing on resilient infrastructure and effective water governance.
Additionally, the brief highlights the vital role of stakeholder collaboration and knowledge-sharing, which are crucial elements of a comprehensive water resilience strategy. By involving local communities, industries, and policymakers, a culture of water sustainability can be encouraged and enforced, and therefore the project consortium encourages the widespread adoption of water-efficient practices across Europe.
As the project partners look to the future beyond the project end date, integrating the knowledge gained on water reuse and resource recovery though the project’s 9 Water-Smart Industrial Symbiosis case studies spread over 4 different geographical settings: Western, Central and Southern Europe and the South-East Mediterranean into policy frameworks will be essential.
