European Commission Proposes New Water Resilience Initiative

Water scarcity has caused significant economic damage at an estimated yearly loss of €9 billion in the energy, agriculture and transport sectors. In an effort to fix the economic impact, the European Commission recently proposed a new Water Resilience Initiative. The proposal aims to address immediate needs and engage with stakeholders to develop long-term solutions. The initiative will prioritise the protection of nature and ecosystems while also focusing on the transforming water management systemically.

The proposal will also include other legislative measures, including the Drinking Water Directive and Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive, and will promote to lessen freshwater abstraction and increase water reuse.
