Water Reuse Europe Knowledge Exchange Event 2019

21st October 2019 @ 8:30 am - 5:00 pm BST

Water Reuse Europe, the trade association for the European water reuse sector, hosted a one day knowledge exchange event in Lille (France) on Monday 21stOctober 2019.

There were 40 participants to our Knowledge Exchange Event in Lille coming from 13 countries in Europe and from all sorts of backgrounds: Universities/Research centres (9); Utilities (18); Private companies, solutions providers, SMEs etc. (9), Associations (3) and municipalities (1). There were 11 EU projects on water reuse and resource recovery presenting the outcomes of their research and therefore providing an opportunity for all the water professionals attending the event to advance their awareness of leading-edge research in the area.

Water Reuse Europe Award 2019 for innovation in water reuse

The shortlisted nominees

At the Knowledge Exchange Event, the winner of our 2019 Award for Innovations in Water Reuse was awarded. The three finalists included The Mörbylånga drinking water treatment plant, Hydraloop, and The FGWRS® demonstrator for greywater recycling. The Award went to the Mörbylånga drinking water treatment plant.

After several years of water shortage, Mörbylånga Municipality in Sweden commissioned a drinking water treatment plant (DWTP), independent from rainfall and groundwater recharge. The plant focuses on desalination of brackish water from wells close to the Baltic Sea, and treating used process water from a nearby food processing plant. The industrial water is treated in the Mörbylånga Pretreatment Plant before being introduced to the DWTP. Blending brackish water and reused industrial water is beneficial as the salinity of industrial water is much lower, which lowers the energy consumption and treatment costs.

Event programme

You will find below our exciting programme for our Knowledge Exchange Event.  The WRE conference already includes presentations from speakers involved in ten EU projects on water recycling and resource recovery and the event should be a great opportunity for participants to learn about leading-edge research in the area, develop new collaboration and share perspectives on the future of the water reuse sector.
