Implementation of Revised Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive

On January 1, 2025, the European Union’s revised Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive came into force, strengthening treatment rules to better protect public health and the environment.

Key updates include extending the directive’s scope to smaller communities starting at 1,000 inhabitants, enhancing nutrient removal from urban wastewater, and introducing standards for micropollutants. The directive also mandates monitoring microplastics and PFAS, promotes the recovery of valuable components like phosphorus, and encourages the reuse of treated water, especially in water-stressed regions.
