Innovative Water Recycling Project in Les Sables-d’Olonne

An innovative water recycling project is being implemented in the western French town of Les Sables-d’Olonne in the Vendée region, that sends recycled water from sewers to household taps by next year.
25% of water from the town will be recycled using reverse osmosis, filtration and disinfecting mechanisms. The recycled water will then be transported from the existing treatment plant to a new one where it is treated again and sent to a constructed marshland. Here the water will pass through a river that feeds into a drinking water reservoir. This water is again treated before being supplied to taps. One of the reasons behind the release of clean water into the constructed marshland is to remineralise the water which is often demineralised during the treatment process.
This project is presently running against local regulation of 1% recycling of tap water in France. Vendée Eau, the implementors of the project, hope that it is allowed to continue even after the ending date of 2027.
