Largest Water Reuse Facility in the World Completes its Final Expansion

The Groundwater Replenishment System (GWRS), operated by the Orange County Water District in Southern California recently completed its final expansion. The largest reuse facility in the world can now treat nearly 500 million liters of secondary wastewater a day. Treated effluent re-supplies local groundwater basins and acts as both a source of drinking water and a barrier to seawater intrusion from the nearby Pacific Ocean. GWRS treatment includes advanced filtration and the UV advanced oxidation (UV AOP) system supplied by WRE member Trojan Technologies, which removes trace contaminants like 1,4-dioxane and N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) and treats a variety of pathogens.
