LES SABLES-D’OLONNE 2024: Session 7 – Speakers profiles and presentation abstracts

Find out more below about our third WRE Conference and Exhibition Speakers and their talks for the seventh session on Industrial Water Reuse:

Angela L. Pinzón Pardo

European Marketing Manager / Global Sustainability Network leader, Nalco Water an Ecolab Company, The Netherlands

As a water professional, Angela L. Pinzón brings + 15 years’ experience in in the industrial water and wastewater sector.  In her current position as marketing manager at Nalco water light, Ecolab, her work focuses on supporting and championing solutions that build climate, water and business’ resilience.  Since 2022, Angela leads the Global Sustainability Network with the objective to accelerate and drive a systemic sustainability change within and beyond Ecolab.

Keynote: Shifting focus to sustainable growth: reviewing vital perspectives on sustainable water management to address opportunities in the industry.

Despite unprecedented awareness on water issues, the rate of growth of water-related risks is far outpacing the efforts being made to mitigate those risks.  In this presentation Angela Pinzón will walk us through some vital perspectives on water having at the heart of the conversation a simple question to which the answer is not straight forward:  what is sustainable water use?.  Hidden opportunities embracing different aspects of water as enabler of business growth will be discussed as well as circular water management approaches.  Some practical cases from the industry will be presented to illustrate the concepts discussed in this presentation.

Robert Lutze

Chief Scientist, EnviroChemie, Germany

Dr.-Ing. Robert Lutze is head of the process engineering department of Envirochemie GmbH, a German supplier of industrial water treatment and recycling solutions. He works for Envirochemie primarily on water recycling solutions, is also responsible for the R&D department, and has been with the company for over 10 years. Previously (2013-2018), he worked as a research associate at the Institute IWAR, Technische Universitaet Darmstadt, Germany, where he worked in the field of synergies between the industrial wastewater and energy sector. In 2019, he finished his PhD thesis. Until 2008 Robert Lutze studied environmental engineering at the Technische Universitaet Berlin, Germany and the University of Calgary, Canada.

Presentation: Effects of pretreatment on membrane performance in industrial wastewater reuse & recycling

Each industry has different wastewater sources that need to be carefully evaluated to find the most efficient solution for treatment and reuse. Usually either the approach of

  • treatment of the total wastewater resulting in significant reductions in water footprint or
  • treatment of slightly contaminated partial water streams with little effort are applied

This presentation will focus on effects of pre-treatment on the membrane performance of existing implementations.Case 1 – Wastewater treatment for recycling in the manufacturing industryThis wastewater recycling plant consists of a chemical-physical treatment, a biological and a membrane step. Results show the need to focus on chemical-physical pre-treatment as selection of precipitation reaction and chemicals used for heavy metal removal significantly influence membrane performance.Case 2 – Treatment of cow water to drinking water quality in the dairy industryThis plant consists of a biological step followed by an ultrafiltration and a reverse osmosis. Here, substrate selection, smoothing of the fluctuations in feed quality, avoidance of nutrient limitations, and stabilization of the pH value are particularly decisive for achieving a high-water recovery up to 85%.

Maëlle Fisselier

Water and Environment Engineer, Coorperl, France

Maëlle FISSELIER is a French environmental and water engineer for Cooperl. She has worked for the food company No.02 in France in the pig meat transformation sector, since 2021 on water management. She is engaged in the development of the food industrial REUSE in France, actually in regulatory evolution. She has studied in the environmental school of Unilasalle EME and in the UK, with a master degree in Water and Wastewater Engineering, from Cranfield University.

Presentation: Water reuse in the French food industry; opportunities and limits

Cooperl has been involved in water savings for many years ; its approach is based on the 3 “R” principle ; reduction, recirculation and then REUSE. The Cooperl’s site of Lamballe is a successful example and already has its water reuse treatment plant, producing reverse osmosis water. It is actually reused for reglementary usages ; the next step will be to use the reverse osmosis water for the casing process in the slaughterhouse. Although the reuse presents many opportunities in a French and international context of global warming, some limits have to be faced to assure food, environment and health security.
