The Search for More Climate-proof Ways of Producing Drinking Water

With 35 partners from eight European countries, the EU-funded Horizon project B-WaterSmart aims at a smarter water cycle. In Woumen, Belgium, for example, ongoing research explores how drinking water production can be secured in face of a changing climate.
Using a pilot installation, WRE member De Watergroep investigates whether innovative membrane technologies make lower-quality surface water available to supplement drinking water production. Aquafin, also one of our members, studies whether treated sewage can be upgraded to become available for drinking water production.
At Aquafin’s sewage treatment plant in Woumen, a pilot installation has been in operation since March 2023 to test technologies. Learn more >>
