Sustainability in the brewing industry is taking a leap forward with an innovative wastewater treatment project at Belgium’s historic Brouwerij Alken brewery. Veolia Water Technologies & Solutions (formerly SUEZ) is implementing cutting-edge technologies to transform wastewater into a valuable resource, reducing environmental impact and promoting circular water use.

The project integrates advanced anaerobic digestion and membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology to treat and repurpose brewery wastewater. These processes help:

  • Reduce water consumption by reclaiming and reusing treated water.
  • Lower carbon footprint through biogas production from organic waste.
  • Minimize environmental discharge by meeting strict water quality standards.

Why does this matter? Breweries consume vast amounts of water, and sustainable water management is crucial for reducing waste and protecting natural resources. By investing in resource recovery, Brouwerij Alken is not only aligning with global sustainability goals but also setting a new standard for environmentally responsible brewing.

As more breweries adopt similar strategies, the industry moves closer to a closed-loop water cycle, where wastewater is no longer seen as waste but as a valuable asset. The success of this project could inspire further innovation across the beverage sector in Europe.
