World Bank Report Calls for Rapid Scale-Up of Water Reuse

A new World Bank report warns that water reuse must expand rapidly to meet growing municipal and industrial demand. With global reuse capacity already tripling over the past two decades, the report projects that potable and industrial reuse could rise eightfold by 2040, reaching a quarter of all municipal freshwater use.
The study highlights a potential US$340 billion investment opportunity, stressing the need for clear regulation, programme-based infrastructure, and private sector engagement. The World Bank’s Scaling ReWater initiative is central to this push, aiming to make reuse as mainstream as renewable energy and desalination.
