Xylem Brews Beer from Wastewater

The water technology company, Xylem, has brewed a Bavarian styled beer using wastewater, in Germany. Called the ‘Reuse Brew’, the beer is a collaboration between Xylem, the Brewery and Beverage Technology at Technical University of Munich, the Urban Water Systems Engineering at TUM, and the city of Weissenburg in Bavaria.

The company worked with the city of Weissenburg to use its wastewater treatment plant to secure the water needed and treat it. The water underwent ozonation and oxidation through ultraviolet (UV) irradiation and hydrogen peroxide. To improve its quality, it is also sent through an advanced filtration methods as well as purification methods to remove contaminants.
